Van den Bos celebrates 65th anniversary in a festive mood |
HONSELERSDIJK, the Netherlands, May 25, 2012; There were clowns, live music, the most exquisite and refined types of food and naturally, awesome lilies in all kind of colours, shapes and sizes at Van den Bos’s 65th Birthday Party, as celebrated at the company headquarters in Honselersdijk, situated opposite the flower auction, FloraHolland.
The event –which was held on May 24th- drew over a hundred customers who flocked to enjoy the extensive lily trials in Van den Bos’ greenhouses and celebrate what is called "65 years of Passion".
Van den Bos’ manager, Edwin van der Klugt, provided a comprehensive overview of the company’s history. “We are more than delighted that customers from all parts of the world have come tonight to celebrate our 65th anniversary. Mr Jo van den Bos founded the company in 1946, in a rather difficult post war era when bulbs were still delivered by bike and motorcycle to local growers. 1956 saw the arrival of the company’s first truck and Jo’s eldest sons, Jan and Toon. By 1970, the company had expanded rapidly, with the first Freesia corms and lily bulbs being exported to Germany. In the 1970s, the company also achieved major success with the exclusive sales rights of Lilium longiflorum ‘White Europe’ which became an absolute bestseller at the Dutch auction for many years. Meanwhile international sales continued to increase and soon the first international branch, Flamingo USA opened its doors in 1984.”
In 1990, Jan and Toon van den Bos sold the company to Cebeco Handelsraad, at that time one of leading agro industrial groups in the Netherlands. 1991 marked another important milestone for Van den Bos. In Chile, the first tests with bulb growing were successful and Van den Bos was one of the first Dutch bulb suppliers to start growing bulbs in the Southern Hemisphere.
Important takeovers followed in 1998 (Beldex Japan) and 1999 (Van der Arend Freesia).
In 2002, the employees of Van den Bos and Hilbert Jonkman purchased the shares of Cebeco-Handelsraad. This was an absolute first in the Dutch business world and in the Dutch bulb industry. More than eight years later, Van den Bos announced their new management team consisting of Edwin van der Klugt, Frans van der Weiden and Jos Barendse. This strong formation took the company to the next level of business management.
