According to a 2009 report from the Dutch Product Board of Horticulture, the Productschap Tuinbouw, Romanians love flowers. A large majority of Romanian consumers (+96.5%) buy fresh cut flowers on a regular base.
In the 2008 survey conducted among Romanian consumers, the respondents selected the rose as their most favourite flower, followed by the lily, the tulip and the orchid. Most flowers are bought from a florist shop and are offered as a gift for Women’s Day, Christmas, Easter, name days and March 1 (Martisoare). Also, Romanians buy their flowers on the market and from street vendors. In Romania, supermarket sales are insignificant with regards to cut flowers and potted plants.
The survey also revealed that one third of the respondents have been buying indoor plants in 2008. A majority of the Romanians (59%) buy the plants for themselves with flowering pot plants accounting for 77% of the total sales.
